Historic Buildings : 2nd Tuesday @13:30

We focus on notable buildings (or built structures), from any country, that are at least 50 years old.  Members take turns to research and present to the group about a building of their choice.  We are interested in questions such as:

  • Why the building was built, and by whom

  • What architectural style was used, and why

  • What construction challenges were faced

  • How the building was perceived and how it was used, at the time and in later centuries

  • How the building was modified and/or restored.

Buildings studied include Strawberry Hill house, London; Kailasa Temple, India; The Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva; York Minster, York; the Panama Canal; Sydney Opera House; Taliesin and Fallingwater, USA; Westminster Palace, London; the Chrysler Building, New York; and Larnach Castle, Otago.
