Current Affairs : 2nd Thursday @10:00
We discuss events of political or social interest and importance happening either internationally or locally, at the present time. We also throw in a little bit of history to wrap some context around the present. Meetings start with a quiz - with the winner having the privilege of composing the next quiz. Each meeting we have members of the group presenting first an international topic and then domestic topic, leading to discussions of both those and related matters. If time permits we may discuss other issues raised by any member of the group.
Many international topics have been driven by the USA: Elections; Canada’s perspective; the Panama Canal; Iran’s history since the 1940s. But we have also included Riots in the UK; Uruguay’s transition to nearly 99% renewable electricity; China’s growing influence. Domestic and social topics have included; HMNZS Manawanui; Māori Language use; Israel and Palestine; funding the NZ Defence forces; whether New Zealand will become a republic; the role of the Governor General; Gloriavale Christian Community; loneliness; and Artificial Intelligence’s role in our society today, in education, disinformation, employment and data centre resources.
There is always so much more to discuss!
